What is Yoga ?
Yoga is a system designed to improve the quality of our lives. It includes a wide range of techniques including body, breath, meditation, chanting and the study of philosophical texts.
Forms of yoga emphasizing the physical are often grouped together under the umbrella term ‘hatha yoga’.
The approach I have been trained in respects the teachings of Krishnamacharya, the most influential Yoga teacher of the twentieth century. He influenced all the asana traditions practised in the world today. He was a pioneer in refining postures, sequencing them and ascribing therapeutic value to them. By combining ‘pranayama’, (breathing techniques) and asana, he made the postures an integral part of a meditative practice.
The ‘viniyoga’ approach to asana adapts the postures to suit individual needs. This tradition encourages slow, repetitive movements linked with the breath. This is a powerful tool in developing a student’s mental and physical well being, clarity and insight.
Yoga has survived for thousands of years, a tribute to the lasting benefits it brings.
